“Book”aneers Invade SMO Library

Geronimo Stilton, everyone’s favourite book-land mouse was sighted strolling down the hallways of St. Monica’s School on September 28th and 29th. There was a good reason for the giant rodent’s presence though. It was the 20th annual St. Monica’s Scholastic Book Fair.

Mrs. Rumney’s class transformed the SMO library into an exciting pirate themed bookstore for the big event. In fact, the great decorations inspired a pirate themed spirit day lead by Mrs. Lancaster’s class.

The books were a hit around the school. All over, students were reading, from inspiring true stories to laugh out loud funny books. Over six full cases of books were sold. The best selling of these including the novel “Took” by Mary Downing Ham and “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” by Jeff Kinney. Also, thanks to Mrs. Priest, the organizer of this event, our school library now has 750 new books from the book fair available for checkout during library periods. Mrs. Priest’s goal that “everyone went home with a book they wanted to read” was achieved. There were also posters, invisible pens, and a contest to win a treasure chest full of candy if you could guess how many were inside. (There were actually 217 jellybeans in the treasure chest, in case you were wondering.)

According to Mrs. Priest, the book fair was a huge success. In it’s 20 year history, this was the biggest book fair yet, earning more money than ever before. In fact, $4 500 was raised which will go towards new library books and classroom supplies.
