**St. Monica’s Scientists**

On Wednesday, February 22, St. Monica’s had their annual Science Fair. Students from Gr. 4-8 participated in this great, fun, learning opportunity. At the Science Fair, students presented their hard work and projects to St. Monica’s alumni judges from St. Joe’s who then chose 15 outstanding projects to move on and represent St. Monica’s at the Simcoe County Regional Science and Technology Fair which took place on April 7 and 8 at Bear Creek Secondary School. There, students had the opportunity to compete against fellow scientists from across Simcoe County for cash and prizes.

Head of the SMO Science Fair, Coach Davidson said that, “The Science Fair allows students to explore areas of science they are interested in, not just what the Ontario Curriculum dictates”.

This year 50 projects and 70 students were at the SMO Science Fair and 15 projects (20 students) represented SMO at the Regional Science Fair. The judges at the regional fair are volunteer science experts from the community. The projects that moved on to the Simcoe County Science Fair were:

Vanessa and Maeve

Radiation v.s. Organisms

Desmond

Plants VS Graywater

Matthew

Bioplastic Power

William and Noah

Flight School

Maya

Robotic Arm v.s Human Arm

Blake

Lucas and Jeremy

How Many Amperes Does Each Appliance Use?

Charlotte

At this fun, learning event students presented their projects, met new people, played games, held snakes, and also won a few prizes along the way.

Special Congratulations to:

  • William - Honourable Mention in Elementary Health Sciences

  • Charlotte - Honourable Mention in Elementary Physical Sciences

  • Maya - Honourable Mention in Elementary Computer and Engineering Sciences

  • William and Noah - Bronze Medal in Elementary Computer and Engineering Sciences

  • Amorina - Bronze Medal in Junior Physical Sciences

  • Anna - Bronze Medal in Junior Health Sciences

  • Desmond - Silver Medal in Jr. Plant and Animal Sciences

  • Vanessa and Maeve - Gold Medal in Junior Plant and Animal Sciences

  • Matthew - Gold Medal in Elementary Computer and Engineering Sciences and a special Chemistry Award

Finally a special congratulations to Emmett and Gavin. Not only did their project win a Junior Gold Medal, they also had the very best project in Physical and Mathematical Sciences in the entire fair. To go along with this amazing accomplishment, they earned a spot at the Canada Wide Science Fair which will take place in Regina, Saskatchewan in May.

Congratulations on another fantastic year of science fair to all our St. Monica’s students and a special thanks to Coach Davidson who lead our SMO team and made this opportunity possible.
