On Thursday, March 9th, a team of four SMO students, Alex, Amy, Emmett, and Julie went to St. Joseph’s High School to compete in the 2017 Intermediate Math Olympics. The SMCDSB wide competition is a great way for students to challenge themselves by competing in fun, unique, math activities. St. Monica’s has participated in the Math Olympics for the past 5 or 6 years.  To add to the excitement, the team thought it would be fun to dress up as superheros!

This year the team got to:

  • program robots to move through challenges,

  • use little wooden blocks to build mini structures,

  • answer challenging word problems, and

  • compete in the always fun relay race.

The team was very successful, coming in second overall and earning silver medals. Emmett, earned even more accolades with a trophy for being the top grade 7 student.  Even Ms. Davidson got in on the fun by winning this year’s teacher “Ken Ken” challenge.  Overall, the team did very well and walked out at the end of the day, successful mathematical superheros!

A special thank you goes to Ms. Davidson for coaching the team.

Later this month, on March 28th, we will be wishing Mrs. Rumney’s Junior Math Olympics team, Julie, Matthew, Molly, and Sean good luck as they compete in their battle of the brains.
